HOMELESS NOT HOPELESS

As dusk was falling, his grandmother was thinking of how to feed Kofi her beloved. Kofi had become a burden on her since he lost his parents on a fatal accident off the Techiman-Kintampo road in the late 90’s. She could not stop fighting with other parents as their children beat Kofi everyday due to his frail nature which was the order of the day in Loora, a village near Nyire in the Banda District in the Bono Region of Ghana.

Five years of good mother care, she left him suddenly and painfully to the join her ancestors. “Why my comforter, why my guardian, why my god? You’re too wicked;oh! Death”, he said in purr. He’s now a ‘street boy’ after being driven from the house by his uncle who disliked her mother before her death. Gallivanting could be his way, I guess. With hardwork and determination, he stopped schooling for two years as he was employed as herdsman.

In our first meeting, he liked me. I had just come for holidays and surprisingly, he decided to follow me to Wenchi the next term to continue his education. Asking him why? His answer was “I want to become a great person in future”. How? I asked again. “I’m homeless not hopeless”,said Kofi. I could not utter a word after hearing this, even though my friends laughed at him. His selfless, obedience and hardwork could lead him to his ambition, I said to myself. He had a great sense of love and caring from everyone in the house he lived at Wenchi. This motivated him greatly to emerge as the overall best student of both BECE and WASSCE at L/A Model 2’C JHS and Wenchi Methodist Senior High School respectively. A scholarship was awarded to him to study at Martyrs of Uganda University, Uganda. One of the renowned universities in Africa.

In his second visit to Ghana, after his admission into the university, he was invited to the 5th Anniversary grand durbar of the Banda-Nyire Youth for Development as the guest speaker. As the President of this noble association, I was perplexed even though I knew what he could do, he was super fantastic that day. He said a lot but much emphasis was laid on this. ” Yes I come from a village and so what? The only difference between they and I as a village boy is the fact that they have opportunities and I have experience so why should I allow my geographical location to define my weaknesses and inabilities.

The time has come for us to come out of our shells since the inspirational and motivational message by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Education has heated us as he said “The child who will develop Ghana does not live in Accra”.

Be inspired with this and work harder towards your goal and you shall surely define your destiny. We’re homeless not hopeless.

Thank you.

My Alma Mater – TTAG-ASHBA President writes

Honourable Eyokro Sie Bediako Isaiah TTAG-ASHBA Sector President

Who’s disturbing me with calls at this time when I’m late to the party. Indeed he was late. It was Friday around 7:30pm when he was in hurry for their usual outings.

His phone was ringing again. Probably, one of his friends. Just at the entrance, Kwasi Oppong saw a lady. Thick tall, fair in complexion, pink lips, pointed nose and round eyes with enormous boobs and butts. “Waaao what a chick! my list will change tonight”, he said.

He has dated thirty-one ladies at age forty-six with no child and house. “You’re my date tonight so let’s move on”, said Kwasi Oppong. Did his instincts make him forget to do what is formal? Obroni is my name, she said to them when one of his friends asked. A sojourner? No! Her complexion could fetch her that name.

The lady trying to know why they always come there, Kwasi Oppong retorted, “Life is all about cars, entertainment and sex. Family? It’s a long division”, he added. With much experience she had in that game, finally drove him home since he could not go alone.

He became ungrateful to his pillow at the fourth hour of the day. Could that be a nightmare or he was driven by his sexual feelings at that hour. With deep breathe, he said “This is the bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh”. Wasn’t it too early? Adam I guess. He would not give the lady an inch far from him. What could she had said as she was hungrily looking for a husband like a roaring Lion seeking for an animal to devour.

She was just four years away from her menopausal age. Was he aware?
Adiepena his mother, was happy for his son however, it ended with sorrow and tears. He had come for the annual Yam Festival celebration. That was his first time in twenty years since he left Fawoman his hometown.

On the third day, probably his last day, Adiepena told him about his two siblings who qualified to go to the Senior high school the same year. Nothing good would come from his mouth since he once said that family is a long division. Government has brought free education besides, you can be employed as zoomlion to help you cater for them. Zoomlion you said? Obroni asked.

Constructing a pool of tears was the only thing she could do. After a while, she recounting her ordeal with their late father who died few days after Adiepena was given the ‘badu dwan’ for her fertility of ten children.

Since then she has become the breadwinner of the family. “We had to go for firewood for your daily bread. Not to talk of labouring in young men farms to sponsor your education. To the worse of it, I was advised to abort you since things were tough for us even though it was an abomination. Hmm you’re my witness oh! God”. Could her last statement be a curse? Obroni sat down quietly as she watched them like the Akan Drama Series she used to watch years ago.

As she shared Adiepena’s sorrow with her deeply within her, she divorced Kwasi Oppong immediately they got to the city. Following that, he had an accident with his company’s car and was fired. How effective would his compass be this time round?
If our ego surpasses our social responsibilities definitely failure awaits us.

Why have we forgotten so soon, the hand that fed us, the womb that formed us and the environment that nurtured us. Our story will not be complete if we try to for go our root. It’s time for us to go back to our root. Must we wait to be called upon?

Knowing clearly that greater percentage of the growth and development of our schools lies in our hands as alumni. Our services are needed. Let’s not forget that the prayers of our headmasters, principals and other school authorities keep us soaring higher. Why should we break this spiritual bondage. I’m proud of my schools and what about you? Think about that. Thank God is Friday. Stay blessed.

THE KILLED TAADI GIRLS AND THE REMARKS OF THE CID BOSS – MY TAKE

By: Murtala Mohammed (Shakespeare)

Wed 18th September, 2019

Writer: Murtala Mohammed

It’s really so disheartening to hear such unpalatable news that the Taadi kidnapped girls are finally confirmed dead. I’m sure by now most or even all the citizens in the country are in a state of melancholy because of this. Others are even calling for the head of the CID Boss. It’s really a sad moment for us as citizens of this country. For this nefarious act, is alien to our motherland.

For a moment, I also thought of going or agreeing with the general public that the head of the CID Boss should be cut or in other words, she should resign. But I had some reservations, which made me to relinquish my earlier thought: (1) What if the CID Boss didn’t utter those statements out of her own will, but was forced by someone to do it for political reasons?
(2) What if she meant good? That is to calm the nerves of the family and the tension that was in the country by then.
(3) If she resigns, will that solve the problem that, the girls are gone forever?

These three important questions above prompted me to have a second thought.

In as much as we are in grief, we must find lasting solutions to this problems rather than ranting and complaining always. We must restructure, retool and reequip our security men and women to be able to combat such cases when they befall us in the future.

My condolences to the family of the victims and Ghanaians at large. May God save this country from wicked people. God bless Ghana.
